Module Overview

Organisational Resilience

The current business environment can be characterised as volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous (VUCA). Recent disruptive events such as the Brexit, COVID-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine war have highlighted the need for businesses to build resilience capabilities to deal with various uncertainties in their operations. Resilience gives entities such as organisations, societies, governments and supply chains the potential to absorb shocks and 'bounce back' after a disruption and maintain their business continuity and competitiveness. However, what constitutes resilience within an organisation, between business partners and throughout the supply chain is not apparent due to the multi-dimensional aspect of the resilience concept.

This module aims to meet the growing need for students trained to analyse and provide solutions to complex organisational resilience issues. It seeks to introduce the underlying resilience theories, practices, frameworks, assessments, and applications so that organisations can promote and build resilience capabilities to mitigate foreseen and unforeseen disruptive events in their businesses, operations and supply chains. The module is delivered over a single semester and primarily focuses on self-directed learning on various business resilience elements and related topics. The underlying philosophy is to provide a diverse and challenging range of learning experiences in which students explore an appropriate body of knowledge drawing on their working experience

The overall approach in this module is decision orientated. Students are constantly required to develop their critical thinking skills and to make decisions. Formal lectures will be supplemented by seminars, case studies, discussion questions, and group work. The instructor acts as a facilitator, balancing the needs of the student to acquire the necessary knowledge of the discipline with the requirement to nurture a competence to apply these concepts and make informed decisions in a real-world context.
