Management & Organisational Behaviour

Module Description:

This course is designed to provide students with a comprehensive grounding in the key concepts in organisational behaviour. The module is designed primarily from a managerial perspective, with the intention of providing students with a basis for understanding the human aspects of management and work, and how organisational interventions can improve business performance. In pursuing careers in managing human resources, the focus is to work for, with and through other people. In order to do this, the module focuses on particular behavioural challenges facing organisations and the individuals who populate them. Students will gain insight into how people impact the effectiveness of their organisation and on how organisations and managers impact the attitudes and behaviours of employees.

The two main objectives of the module are to:

  • Introduce key concepts and frameworks in organisational behaviour to increase knowledge and understanding of human behaviour in organisations and;
  • Foster an understanding of how to be more effective in organisational settings through applying these concepts through engaging in problem solving activities.

  2. The individual – perception, learning, attitudes, personality, motivation
  3. Motivation concepts and applications
  4. Groups, the nature of work groups, group processes and behaviours
  5. Teams and team work
  6. Communication
  7. The role of culture in an organisation
  8. Leadership
  9. Organisational Change & Development

To accomplish the module’s aims, a variety of learning methods and activities will be utilised, including cases, discussions, videos, classroom activities and out-of-class reading of texts and articles. Learning will be interactive and class session will require your participation.

Formal end of term 2-hour exam. The exam will include essay questions where the students are required to provide answers which will reflect on theory and identify, analyse and suggest improvements to organisational practices.
