Module Overview

Innovation & New Product Development

Product managers work in a complex, cross-functional environment, where often they must try to influence other departments to adopt their ideas. To meet the challenges of the role, it is advantageous for product managers to have a broad understanding of innovation and product development. And to know what types of analysis can be used to strengthen their ideas. So, the main aim of this module is to explain the key elements of managing innovation. The module will start with the Innovation Pentathlon Framework, which gives participants a clear understanding of the five main elements of innovation management and how they are related. Then, delegates will be given an overview of the main tasks in each of the five elements and the implications of these for product managers.

Important tools, techniques, and concepts such as diffusion theory, the Kano Model, disruptive technology, s-curves, value innovation and road-mapping will be covered. How each of these tools and techniques can be applied will be explained with numerous examples and mini case studies.

At the end of the module, product managers will have a grounded understanding of innovation and NPD and will know what tools and techniques they can apply, and when to use them to bring more structure and authority to their arguments.
