TQM

The principles of TQM. Total Involvement. Teamwork. The role of the customer both internal and external. Changing customer needs. Product quality, fitness for purpose, suitability for use and value for money. Product specifications. Stages in controlling quality of products. Process Control and measurement, reduction in product and ingredient variability.

Continuous Improvement

Continual improvement of products and processes as part of global business strategies. Cost implication of continuous improvement. Steps involved in continuous improvement. Product design and development.Setting quality standards. Reduction in rework and scrap levels. Elimination of defects in materials, and products. Designing and implementing improvement plans. Development of suggestions for improvement.

Manufacturing

Preparation for manufacturing, sourcing of quality materials and components. Defining methods of manufacture. Identification of equipment involved. Identification of staffing required. Concepts of WCM and JIT. Reduction in manufacturing and distribution lead times. Management of inventories.

Mapping Manufacturing Processes

Reviewing the fundamental stages of manufacturing processes via flow diagrams. Costing the manufacturing process. Measuring the quality of the process via cost, time and output analysis. Identification of critical production bottlenecks, equipment issues and potential causes of product defects. Critical path analysis.

Technical Problem Solving

Problem identification and traceability. Systematic approach to problem solving and failure analysis. Formulation of problem statements. Characterisation of production problems i.e. machinery. Procedure etc. Problem complaint resolution. Management of the customer complaints. Auditing practice. Documenting corrective action. Proposing improvements / solutions and monitoring effectiveness. The change control process. Project Management.

Preventative maintenance and capability metrics

What is Preventative Maintenance? Repairs versus Preventative Maintenance. Objectives of Preventative Maintenance. How does PM fit with Operating Strategies? CP/CPK and six sigma.
