The aim of this module is to provide the student with the skillset appropriate to deal with managerial,ethical and environmental concerns in their professional career.

Managerial Effectiveness

Analyse measures and methods of managerial effectiveness. Examine the development of managerial science, discuss Contingency theory and Situational Leadership in selected case studies. Interpret Blake&Mouton Managerial Grid as performance measure.

International Management & Globalisation

Consider in detail the dimensions and levels of Globalisation. Discuss the Paradox of Globalisation and Localisation. Examine the organisation models for composition of International companies. Interpret International Managment methods in terms of Centraliztion, Co-ordination and Standardisation; Communicating and negotiating in a global environment; Ethics and corporate responsibility; Motivation and human resource management in the global context.

Group Interaction and Dynamics:

Examine the factors that affect behaviour or individuals and groups in the work environment. Discuss the differences between teamwork and working in groups.Examine communication patterns ,cooperation,competition and conflict. Describe the functions of judgement and collaboration in decisionmaking and planning. The role of communication in promoting cohesiveness and commitment to organisational goals.

Engineering Ethics

Engineering Ethics. Explain fundamental definitions of Morals, Ethics and relationship with law. Examine Codes of ethics for Engineers - specifically Engineers Ireland Code of Ethics. Discuss case studies relating to Engineering Ethics and moral dilemmas.

Project management Processes

Examine the importance of project management processes, Initiation, Planning, Executing,Controlling,ClosingScope Management: Work Breakdown Structure [WBS]– derivation and example. Time Management : Activity Definition vs. WBS, methods of Schedule DevelopmentCost Management: Resource planning, techniques of Cost Estimation Methods of project cost control

Financial Management

Evaluate product costs using both traditional and Activity Based methods.Construct detailed overall and departmental budgets.Evaluate operational performance using basic variance analysis tools

Organistional Structure and Design

Examine the role of the manager in fostering group and teamwork. The controversial nature of Control and power. Examinination of evolution of organisational control structures. Examine Delegation processes, discuss inter-relationship among accountability, authority and responsibility

Environmental Management

Environmental Management - Waste streams and sources of pollution,Waste management, Environmental Legislation, Relevant case studies including licensing. BAT (best available technologies).

Health and Safety Management

Health and Safety Management- Hazard identification and risk assessment,CE marking and the machinery directive and relevent case studies of significant industrial incidents. Codes of practise related to health and safety.
