Vocal Performance Studies 1

Principal Study: Building on the student’s existing levels of achievement, this module introduces Vocal studies at third level, focusing on

  • A systematic programme of studies, scales and arpeggios and sight-reading
  • Solo repertoire representing different composers and different musical styles

Working with a repetiteur every week, repertoire is chosen in consultation with Principal Study lecturer.

Performance Platform – Italian/Arie Antiche: This introduces students to the practical application of the International Phonetic Alphabet and rules of Italian pronunciation and prosody. It also focuses on the development of stylistic awareness and interpretive skills when performing Italian Arie Antiche.

Stagecraft: This introduces students to the fundamental principles of acting, with an emphasis on action, imagination, sensory work, concentration of attention, presence, given circumstances and improvisation. Students are also introduced to fundamental principles of movement for the stage. The importance of working constructively and creatively in an ensemble will also be emphasised.

Studies, scales/exercises; sight-reading; vocal technique; Italian pronunciation; International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA); application of acting and movement to singing.Repertoire: works chosen from the Italian Arie Antiche, lute song, English song and Irish song repertoire. More information is available in Appendix 1A.

Principal Study: This is taught on a one-to-one basis with continuous guidance and feedback in vocal technique, repertoire, performance style and linguistic pronunciation given by the vocal lecturer and repetiteur respectively. The student will prepare vocal material in advance for the class with the coach/repetiteur. Aspects of performance and interpretation will be discussed and rehearsed. Performance opportunities will be provided.

Performance Platform: This is split into two separate group classes: Italian aria in which the student will perform and observe his/her peers in performance, and a language class where the student will learn to read and pronounce the Italian language. Under the direction of the specialist Vocal and Italian language lecturers, the student will learn to appraise the material performed in class and develop initiative in preparing and presenting Italian repertoire.

Stagecraft: This is a group class, with a dual emphasis on individual students acquiring acting and movement skills as well as interacting with the ensemble. The initial emphasis will be on the self, rather than the character, with text-based work introduced later in the module.

All of the above are strongly student-centred. Individual programmes of study are designed to meet the specific needs of the learner and daily self-directed practice forms an integral part of the process in order to achieve the learning outcomes;
