This module is intended to provide all students with an introduction to, and overview of, the most significant aspects of Irish Traditional Music, from the sixteenth century to the present day. This will include discussion of the various instruments, song both in Irish and English, dance and collecting/collectors, all within an historical and sociological context. The inclusion of six performance-based specialist lectures, punctuating the course at appropriate intervals, should provide an invaluable practical component, and, to a certain degree, demonstrate the way in which some instrumental music today illustrates a fusion / cross-fertilisation of styles.
Evolution and development of the most significant Irish traditional instruments (e.g. harp, uilleann pipes, flute, tin-whistle, fiddle, concertina, accordion)
Music and performance styles associated with various traditional instruments, with slightly greater focus on the harping tradition and the music of Turlough O’Carolan
Songs in Irish (including those in sean-nós style) and English
Dance in Ireland from the seventeenth century to the present day
Collecting and collectors of Irish Traditional Music in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries
This module is taught through weekly lectures, listening, discussion and analysis. In addition, the course will include six performance-based specialist lectures, occurring approximately every four weeks.
