Module Overview

Foundations of Musical Theory

This course provides a comprehensive programme for Stage 1 students who need a more solid foundation in musical theory, basic aural training and composition. The pedagogical approach is intensive in nature, moving away from the ‘one grade a year’ system by embracing a more holistic perspective. The course content is in keeping with modern pedagogical approaches in music education, while encompassing  models of adult learning specifically tailored to students starting their music degree studies. The acquisition of practical skills, in terms of aural and composition, are integrated into the elements of musical theory throughout the course.

This module is taken by Stage 1 students who require additional academic/theoretical supports to embark upon their degree. In Stage 2, these students with then take Composition Studies 1.
