Unit A: Music Technology 3:
In this unit students are introduced to Audio Editing, and gain the skills and knowledge to carry out essential digital audio editing through electroacoustic composition and demo-tape production. Though there are no pre-requisites, the completion of Music Technology 2 (Stage 2) is highly recommended.
Unit B: Professional Studies 3:
Professional Studies 3 focuses on developing specific professional skills that will support students’ musical skills as they prepare for their musical careers. Professional Studies 3 will start the transition from 3rd level education to the work place / further study in a practical way through short courses on Portfolio and Artistic Management.
- Portfolio: This will give the student the skills to create a professional multimedia portfolio and document their learning progression.
- Artistic Management: This will develop skills to independently organise a concert or project.
Core: all Stage 3 students.
Option: available to students on other courses.
Unit A: Music Technology 3
In the lectures, students acquire essential knowledge about:
- Sound and digital audio signal
- Digitization (DAC/ADC etc.)
- Digital audio formats (bit rate, sampling frequency, etc.)
- Encode/Decode (audio to/from computer file)
- Computer storage system (capacity, types etc.)
- Audio media (formats, CD/Vinyl/file, pressed/burned etc.)
- Monitoring system (speaker/headphone, function, basic configuration etc.)
- Audio interface (function, basic configuration etc.)
- Audio editor (function, major products)
- Effect processor (function)
- Health and safety
In the workshops, students:
- Prepare/set up essential audio editing equipment and the audio materials
- Edit audio files using a professional audio editing software, such as Audition, DSP Quattro, etc.
- Create a demo tape from the recording made in Music Technology 2 or from material provided by the lecturer
- Create a digital audio composition with audio materials provided.by the lecturer
Unit B: Professional Studies 3
Portfolio: creating a multimedia portfolio, writing long and short bios, artist photos, recording for portfolio, documenting learning and career progression.
Artistic Management: project management, artistic project planning, concert programming, programme writing, finding your audience.
Unit A: Music Technology 3
This module is taught through lectures and workshops.
The lectures equip the students with essential knowledge about digital sound and computer/audio technologies to edit recorded music/sound with appropriate choice and use of equipment.
The workshops enable the students to exercise essential digital audio editing skills to produce audio file in a standard format based on the acquired knowledge.
Unit B: Professional Studies 3
Portfolio: With an emphasis on practice-based learning the lecturer will demonstrate how to create a current portfolio and provide feedback on students’ submissions while developing their own portfolio. 6 x 1-hour lectures.
Artistic Management: The lecturer will lead the students through planning an individual and/or group project with an emphasis on collaborative and peer learning. 6 x 1-hour lectures.
