Vocal Performance Studies 3A

Principal Study: Building on the student’s levels of achievement in Stage 2, this module focuses on the further development of students’ performance abilities through a more advanced programme of

  • Studies, recitatives and sight-reading
  • Solo art song, oratorio and operatic repertoire representing different composers and different musical styles

Working with a repetiteur every week, repertoire is chosen in consultation with Principal Study lecturer.

Performance Platform – French Mélodie: This enables students to use the practical application of the International Phonetic Alphabet and to learn the rules of French pronunciation and prosody. It also focuses on the development of stylistic awareness and interpretive skills when performing French Mélodie.

Opera Ensemble/Stagecraft: This aims to build a framework for personal expression based on experience already gained. It will help to develop in singers a self-belief which will assist them to go beyond their usual performing patterns, to step out of comfort zones and to take creative risks.

Studies, scales/exercises; sight-reading; technical development; French pronunciation; International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA); application of acting and movement to singing.Repertoire: works chosen from the German lieder, French Mélodie, English song, oratorio and operatic aria and ensemble repertoire. Principal Study: This is taught on a one-to-one basis with continuous guidance and feedback in vocal technique, repertoire, performance style and linguistic pronunciation given by the lecturers. The student will prepare vocal material in advance for the class with the coach/repetiteur. Aspects of performance and interpretation of the material being studied will be discussed and rehearsed. Through rehearsal, the repetiteur will assist in developing the student’s interpretative and communicative skills in performance. Principal Study will also comprise of performance opportunities and self-directed practice.

Performance Platform: This is split into two separate group classes: French Mélodie in which the student will perform and observe his/her peers in performance, and a language class where the student will learn to read and pronounce the French language. Under the direction of the specialist Vocal and French language lecturers, the student will learn to discuss the material performed in class. The specialist lecturers will also equip students to develop initiative in preparing and presenting French repertoire.

Opera Ensemble/Stagecraft:

This consists of weekly classes led by experienced professionals culminating in staged performances of opera ensembles. Through carefully chosen excerpts from the operatic canon the Ensemble Director and Repetiteur will guide students through the discovery of skills relating to acting and movement, characterisation, use of language, recitative, interpretation and style.

All of the above are strongly student-centred. Individual programmes of study are designed to meet the specific needs of the learner. Daily self-directed practice forms an integral part of the process in order to achieve the learning outcomes.
