Building on the History of Music survey course completed at the end of Stage 2, the Conservatoire offers students the opportunity to continue their historical studies in Stages 3 and 4, examining in depth a range of historical, performance, and socio-historical issues in music. Studies in Music History and Performance Practice 1 is designed to enable students to evaluate the stylistic and interpretative aspects of the music and also place it in a wider cultural context. Drawing on staff specialisms and research, students will be able to select one topic from a suite of subjects each semester.

The Conservatoire provides a broad range of topics every year that encompasses different musical periods, individual composers, musical genres, and performance-based interpretation.
This module will be delivered through lectures, which will include discussion, listening, and engaging with scores.
