Musician in the Community

In  Unit A,  Creative Musicianship Skills for Teaching, students will be introduced to a range of creative musicianship skills, teaching strategies and activities that can be used in various instrumental/vocal teaching contexts but with particular reference to group teaching and community settings. The emphasis will be on experiential and procedural learning integrating musical, technical, creative, expressive and pedagogical skills.

In Unit B, Community-based Project, students will gain practical teaching experience through placement within group performance / community music settings. The project will enable students to adapt and apply their instrumental and pedagogical skills and knowledge they will be facilitated in developing further professional skills sets (e.g. communication, collaboration, creativity, presentation, group management, leadership, problem-solving). In addition students will engage in critical thinking and self-reflection, and the project will provide the opportunity for them to broaden their awareness of music as a socio-cultural phenomenon. Students will work collaboratively with tutors and peers and will be supported by workshop / tutorials.

Unit A: Creative Musicianship Skills for Teaching:

  • A variety of pedagogical approaches to music teaching and learning in general (e.g. as advocated by Kodály, Dalcroze, Orff and Suzuki) and approaches to instrumental and vocal teaching and learning in particular (e.g. Colourstrings, Colourkeys).
  • Approaches for integrating the development of technical skill and interpretative expressiveness and theoretical knowledge and interpretative skills in music teaching and learning
  • Practical engagement with a variety of music material through singing, solfa, movement, playing
  • Skills, strategies and principles of group teaching
  • Differentiation
  • Strategies for assessing learning, diagnosing and remedying technical and musical issues in group contexts
  • Incorporating teaching improvisation [in one-to-one and group settings]
  • Strategies for motivating musical creativity

Unit B: Community-based Project:

Within this unit students will be expected to draw upon and adapt musical and pedagogical skills, knowledge and understanding developed in the Creative Musicianship Skills module.

  • Strategies for group teaching

  • Exploration and analysis of music content (building on Creative Musicianship Skills)
  • Group management skills including differentiation
  • History and structure of specific performance context
  • Relevant educational policies (e.g. Child protection and Vulnerable Adult policies)

Unit A: Creative Musicianship Skills for Teaching:

Learning and teaching will take place within an active ‘workshop context’ using singing, solfa, movement and instruments. There will be an emphasis on experiential and procedural learning and will involve collaborative and peer-learning. Students will analyse and reflect on their own learning. This practical learning will be grounded in theory through independent study and reading.

 

Unit B: Community-based Project:

The focus of this unit is experiential and procedural learning through working collaboratively with tutors in community-based or group performance contexts. This experiential learning will be supported by workshop sessions with course tutors. Through discussion and self-reflection, students will be given an opportunity to share, evaluate and reflect on their experience and to engage in collaborative planning and preparation. Students will be expected to build on and adapt the skills, knowledge and understanding developed in the Creative Musicianship Skills for Teaching module. These workshops will also facilitate students in gaining professional knowledge regarding appropriate educational policy (e.g. child-protection policy), issues regarding group teaching and community music.
