Composition Portfolio 1

This module develops expertise in the discipline of creative composition and is core for Composition major students. The student completes a portfolio of compositions, over the course of which they are supported in the emergence of an original compositional voice, through composing for various media. The student is introduced to various compositional processes of the 20th/21st century, and shown how to employ them in the compositions. The taught modules provide in-depth technical tuition in subject areas relevant to all composition students, in order that the Portfolio tuition can be focused on the aesthetics and specific techniques relevant to the individual student's compositional direction.

Instrumentation

The module is taught through weekly individual one-hour tutorials. This is complemented by a series of eight two-hour composition seminars by visiting lecturers, which will equip the student with a thorough knowledge of contemporary trends and compositional techniques. Short exercises in various contemporary styles, composition techniques, orchestration, instrumental effects, melody, harmony, counterpoint, sonorities and textures will be undertaken as part of the learning process.
