History of Ideas

 

In History of Ideas students will consider the principal areas and themes of philosophical thinking (such as the Theory of Knowledge/Basic Logic) with a simple introduction to the ideas of important philosophers from Plato to Aquinas .The course is aimed at all students but particularly those pursuing Pedagogy and Musicology. Students will further examine the exposition , preservation and cahnge in ideas in Western Europe from Descartes to Derrida exploring their influence and shaping of contemporary culture .

Approaches to the History of Ideas from an epistemological viewpoint to include: • The study of the origins, structure and validity of knowledge with particular reference to Empirical, Rational and Revelation knowledge.• To include examination of the ‘framework of conceptions’: the Meta–narrative or worldview of the great thinkers (Pre-Modern).

History of Ideas

A further study of the validity of empirical knowledge in the age of Enlightenment, and its slow dissolution to a world of scepticism, irony and the rejection of the ideologies of Modernism in the new age of relativism.
