Module Overview

Technology for Live Performance & Studio Recording

This is an optional module for Stage 3 or 4 students.

Unit A: Technology for Live Performance: The students develop advanced skills and knowledge to carry out live music performance using music technology.

Unit B: Technology for Studio Recording: The students develop advanced skills and knowledge to carry out professional recording, mixing and mastering of music performance in recording studio environment.

Though there are no pre-requisites, completion of Music Technology 2 and Music Technology 3 modules is advantageous.

Unit A: Technology for Live Performance:

In the lectures, students acquire advanced knowledge about:

  • Channels (mono, stereo, multi-channel)
  • Signal (balance, unbalance, impedance, input level, capacity, etc.)
  • Cable (mechanism, handling, balance/unbalance, connectors, capacity and fuse, microphone/line/speaker cables, etc.)
  • Stage-use microphone (mechanism, polar patterns, shape, selection, dynamic/condenser, power supply formats, etc.)
  • Power amplifier (mechanism, manipulation, etc.)
  • Mid/Far field monitoring system (active/passive, configuration, etc.)
  • Feedback (mechanism, elimination, etc.)
  • Effect processor (configuration of compressor/equalizer in PA system)
  • Mixing desk (mechanism, active/passive, input/output, gain/level, signal routing, etc.)
  • Stands (function, shape, etc.)
  • Equipment manufacturers
  • Health and safety in live performance environment with PA system.

In the workshops, students:

  • Identify required technology based on style of live performance.
  • Prepare/ set up professional public address system equipment.
  • Amplify a music performance.
  • Exercise tools (circuit tester, soldering iron, etc.).
  • Identify/prevent health and safety risks in context of live performance set up.
  • Execute legal requirements (fire exit indication, epilepsy notice, etc.).

Unit B: Technology for Studio Recording

In the lecture, students acquire advanced knowledge about:

  • Channels (mono, stereo, surround, multi-channel systems etc.)
  • Signal (balance, unbalance, impedance, input level, capacity, etc.)
  • Cable (mechanism, material, balance/unbalance, connectors, capacity and fuse, microphone/line/speaker cables, etc.)
  • Recording microphone (mechanism, polar patterns, frequency response, shape, selection, dynamic/condenser, etc.)
  • Microphone amplifier (mechanism, function, built-in/external, manipulation, etc.)
  • Near-field monitoring system (mechanism, configuration, etc.)
  • Effect processor (mechanism, configuration of compressor/equaliser/reverb in recording/mixing etc.)
  • Audio interface (mechanism, input/output, gain/level, etc.)
  • Digital Audio Workstation (mechanism, configuration and manipulation)
  • Stands (function, shape, etc.)
  • Major Equipment manufacturers
  • Health and safety in studio environment

In the workshop, students:

  • Identify required technology based on style/genre
  • Prepare/set up professional recording, mixing, mastering equipment
  • Record a music performance then mix and master the recorded audio using a professional DAW software, such as Pro Tools, Cubase etc.
  • Create CD and audio files in industry standard format(s)
  • Identify/prevent health and safety risks in the context of a studio recording set-up

Unit A: Technology for Live Performance:

This unit is taught through lectures and workshops.

The lectures equip the students with the systematic knowledge required to use a PA system for professional live performance.

The workshops enable the students to exercise utilisation of a a PA system in live performance context based on the knowledge acquired.

Unit B: Technology for Studio Recording:

This unit is taught through lectures and workshops.

The lectures equip the students with the systematic knowledge required to produce music audio CD/files in professional standard.
