Module Overview

Principal Study: Building on the student’s achievement in Stage 3, this module refines the focus on supporting a portfolio career. In addition to preparing repertoire for performance, the core content explores a wider skill-set which develops an understanding of different pathways within a professional career (e,g. pedagogy, musicology, community music and /or composition). Although students taking this option elect to receive fewer credits than the 4A module, under the guidance of their Principal Study lecturer, they are encouraged to avail of  as many performance opportunities as possible (including masterclasses) and continue to perform repertoire to the highest possible standard. Pedagogy students also study pedagogical repertoire and the individual instrumental lesson supports the Instrumental/Vocal Pedagogy 2 module by focusing on instrument/voice-specific pedagogical issues. Musicology, Composition and Pedagogy Majors may choose either a lecture recital, a presentation and performance of original (self-composed) composition(s) or a presentation and performance of pedagogical repertoire (all of 20 minutes’ duration) for their Performance Examination 1.

Keyboard Performance Class: This weekly class provides an important transition from the one-to-one lesson to the eventual public performance. Students perform works in various stages of preparation in a collegiate ambiance and benefit from the development of peer- and self-criticism. Students in Stages 3 and 4 are expected to display initiative and act as positive role models for students in Stages 1 and 2.
