Professional Studies 4

Professional Studies 4 is a core module for all students. It focuses on developing specific professional skills that will support students’ musical skills as they prepare for their musical careers. In Professional Studies 4 the student will add to the skills developed in Professional Studies 1, 2 and 3 through short courses in Creative Media for Musicians, Personal and Career Management and Creative Collaboration.

  • Creative Media for Musicians: This course will develop an understanding of the specific skills needed in a recording session, how to engage with media in a creative manner, and how to develop skills to navigate a competitive industry.
  • Personal and Career Management: This course aims to equip the student with the administrative and management skills needed for a career in music.
  • Creative Collaboration involves students in working across genres co-creating their own music, improvising, discussing and performing. It will include equality of participation and self-directed learning through mentored support.

Creative Media for Musicians: Introduction; The toolkit required to engage in a competitive field, the recording process, planning for the recording, recording skills for the musician (audio and video), creating content using the highest possible standards, learning how to approach industry professionals.

Personal and Career Management:  writing a grant application, making a tax return, artist exemptions applications, keeping a professional diary, insurance for the performer and teacher, making a proposal, risk assessment, creating a budget, maintaining financial records.

Creative Collaboration:  creative composition, improvisation, communication skills, types of listening, co-creative practice, team working in non-hierarchical structures.

Lectures/seminars/workshops with an emphasis on practice-based learning and various modes of student interaction and involvement.

Creative Media for Musicians: With an emphasis on practice-based learning, the lecturer will explain the recording process and demonstrate skills required to make both audio and video recordings. There will be advice on creating content for online dissemination with an emphasis on positive visible presence. Finally, the lecturer will give recommendations on the best way to approach the media and industry professionals to build profile and secure engagements. 6 x 1 hour Lectures/Workshops

Personal and Career management: This component will be delivered through a series of seminars and workshops. 6 x 1 hour Seminar/Workshops.

Creative Collaboration: The Lecturer will act as a facilitator in a seminar setting, leading discussion and facilitating student interaction and involvement. 12 x 1 hour Lecture/Seminar
