Module Overview

Traditional Performance Studies 4

Principal Study: Building on existing levels of achievement in Stages 1, 2 and 3 students of Irish Traditional Music Performance Studies further their studies on their chosen Instrument. The student will improve upon their technical skills and musical awareness for instrumental/vocal performance while consolidating their skills for productive practice and independent learning. They will also enhance their critical listening and performance skills necessary for advanced playing/singing. The student will study more complex repertoire, including descriptive or programmatic pieces and a selection of slow airs. This should include suitable reference to textual demands on phrasing and interpretation as advised by the Principal Study lecturer. The student may also undertake an additional (Minor) Instrument/voice provided a class for such an instrument is available. This is to acknowledge the multi-skilled nature of much Irish traditional music performance. If the student chooses this option of a Minor instrument, the Practical Examination 2 mark will be divided on a 70%-30% basis.

Performance Seminar and Specialist Recitals in ITM

This Performance Seminar, which runs across the four years, provides an interactive forum where students will present in-class recitals and/or presentations of more advanced repertoire. Students may also present their own compositions and will be assisted in this endeavour by their lecturers. This class is designed to foster self-evaluation and peer-criticism and to develop the artistic awareness necessary to perform both as a solo artist and in professional ensembles. This weekly seminar aims to provide guided performance experience and to foster an engagement with their peers in a non-public arena and to also prepare students for performances in our Specialist Recitals series in Irish Traditional Music. In Stage 4 the performance seminar and specialist recitals will focus on the student’s final performance examination. Students are also expected to develop further their listening and ensemble skills, and acquire a critical understanding of best practice in solo and ensemble playing, with particular emphasis on improvisation and variation.

Repertoire of tunes/songs in instrumental and vocal traditions

Advanced repertoire of tunes/songs with particular emphasis on slow airs and descriptive pieces from the instrumental and vocal traditions. To be performed with interpretative awareness and contrasting styles, including regional style, individual style improvisation and where possible composition.

Principal Study: This is taught on a one-to-one basis with continuous guidance and feedback given by the specialist lecturer in the chosen discipline.

Performance Seminar and Specialist Recitals in ITM: This comprises a weekly discursive performance workshop for Irish Traditional Music students from all four years.

Both components are strongly student-centred. Individual programmes of study are designed to meet the specific needs of the learner. Daily self-directed practice forms an integral part of the process in order to achieve the learning outcomes.
