All Stage 4 students (with the exception of Musicology and Composition majors) complete a research-based project. The project consists of a written dissertation on a musicological, performance-based, or music education subject chosen by the student. Before being assigned a supervisor for individual mentoring, students attend a short Research Methodology course in semester 1. This will provide training in research techniques, compiling/managing a bibliography, fine-tuning the Research Proposal and how to structure and plan the Research Project.

Research Methodology:
Compiling and managing a bibliography (using RILM, JSTOR, ProQuest and other databases).
Sourcing material (including material not available in the library or online).
Referencing and footnoting in a multi-chaptered document, and practical writing skills.
Writing a Research Proposal; planning and structuring the Research Project.
Research Methodology: This short course equips students with the skills to begin their Research Project and is delivered through a series of lectures and student presentations in weeks 1 to 4 of Semester 1. Students prepare a written research proposal and present this to the class and members of staff to get feedback. Students then revise their proposal, based on the feedback, in preparation for working with their assigned supervisor.
Research Project: Students work one-on-one with an assigned supervisor throughout the year. The supervisor’s role is to help guide the project, set targets, give feedback and make recommendations. It should be noted that this is the student’s project and there is a strong emphasis on self-directed learning and research.
