Music Philosophy and Criticism 2

The Music Philosophy and Criticism modules offer students an opportunity to explore four topics (over six weeks each) on the development of music historiography and the philosophy of music. A range of topics will be offered each year drawing on staff research and specialisms. A key feature of the module is to develop students’ critical reading skills and the ability to assess and evaluate a range of (sometimes) divergent views.

The following is a sample, but not exhaustive, list of topics: Contextual Studies (social, cultural, political); The Musical Canon (periodisation, reception history, authenticity); Recent Developments in Musicology and the Philosophy of Music (genre, cultural theory, gender studies, aesthetics).

Each 6-week topic commences with a lecture followed by five tutorials in which students discuss set readings/texts.
