Module Overview

Scripture, Liturgy and Music

Unit A: Introduction to Scripture 2 (New Testament)

This unit provides students with a clear comprehension of biblical structures which will be invaluable for working in a liturgical setting as the vast majority of text used are drawn from Scripture. Students will explore the construction of the New Testament and analyse its literary styles. The sources for the text are critically examined and assessed in a chronological framework. The theological strands and patterns embedded in the text are explored and discussed in their historical and geographical context.

Unit B: Liturgy and Music 2 (Post-Reformation)

This unit explores the role of music in Christian worship after the reformation. The impact of the reformation is considered in a musical context and the development of new liturgical practices is explored. Particular attention will be given to the development of hymnody in both catholic and reformed traditions. Papal encyclicals will be analysed and the effects of both the First and Second Vatican Councils will be considered.
