Introduction to Pharmaceuticals

Terminology, general requirements of pharmaceuticals and pharmaceutical manufacturing processes.

Pharmaceutical Products

Classification of pharmaceuticals, topical, oral dose, parenterals, aerosol, OTC, prescription, sustained release products, biopharmaceuticals etc. Drug absorption and routes of administration. Action of common pharmaceuticals, action of paracetamol, aspirin and selected pharmaceuticals.

Tablet Manufacture and Encapsulation

Basic components of the tablet and capsule manufacturing unit operation. Milling, blending and granulation used in tablet manufacturing. Compressing operations and machinery involved. Solvent and aqueous coating: theory and practice of coating operations. Processes of formulating, mixing, drying, micronizing, encapsulation, tableting. Equipment, components and procedures involved and facility requirements. Tablet testing.

Topical Formulations

Transdermal patch. Semi-solid formulations. Process description. Pharmacoepial tests.

Packaging of Pharmaceutical Products

Purpose of packaging, types of products. Packaging materials: glass, plastics and metal. Sterile and non-sterile packaging. Strip, blister and bottle packaging.Tamper evidence and anti-counterfeit measures, Child proofing, Braille requirements for packaging.

PRACTICALS

A series of laboratory practical sessions will be provided to teach the essential stages involved in the manufacture of dosage forms. These will support and reflect the aims and learning outcomes of this module and will run concurrently with lectures. The practical course will enable students to: 1. Prepare oral dosage and semi-solid formulations2. Analyse physical and chemical properties of the formulations3. Troubleshoot processes
