Module Overview

Photography Practice 1: Making Images

Photographic images saturate our society. This module is an introduction to diverse methods of making images and encourages students to expand their abilities to create images and develop a more complex understanding of the meaning and uses for photography.

Professional image-makers need the skills to design and create pictures that work for different media and different purposes. Consequently students are required to make photographs that address a range of ideas and contexts. Students will be challenged to understand the diverse levels of interpretation that may be applied to their images. Students will use a range of image making techniques including traditional wet darkrooms as well as state of the art computer labs.

Students will create photographs with 35mm film cameras, digital SLRs, and handmade pinhole cameras to understand their characteristics and advantages. Project briefs will challenge students to apply their creativity to express specific concepts as well as open ended self-directed projects.
