Module Description
This subject examines Project Management techniques, along with an historical review of management styles, organisational structures and project teams. It will build upon the knowledge gained from computer applications and from earlier study on this course. This module will introduce the student to project evaluation, planning and management. Techniques for cost control, resource management, and their implementation will be identified. Consideration will be given to specific contracts including sub-contracts.
Module Aims
This module aims to give students a basic knowledge of project management techniques and to identify the interrelationships between parties involved in taking an engineering project from conceptual stage to final completion. It also aims to enable the student understand the main aspects of teamwork, team building and management together with key elements of control and financial evaluation.
Organisational considerations
History of organisational structure from the scientific through administrative and humanistic approaches to
management. The organic, bureaucratic and other organisations through the ages to the present day.
Modern organisation structure: line, function, matrix, project.
Total quality management systems and customer focus.
Management of Project Teams:
Discovering the political environment and strategies for survival.
Working as part of a design team.
People side of project management, personality, leadership and team effectiveness.
Planning the project:
Set objectives, phases of the project, milestones in the project.
Task definition and duration.
Task linking, dependencies and sequencing.
Basic network analysis and critical path.
Gantt charts
Application of MS project to above
Resource Management
Labour allocation.
Resource calendars.
Plant and equipment optimisation
Use of appropriate software including MS project and access.
Project Reporting:
Milestones (sub-projects achieved), Claims for interim payments.
Customised reporting (eg. For individual disciplines)
Financial:
Investment and Project appraisal methods, IRR, NPV and DCF
Estimates and budgets.
Cash flow and working capital requirements
Use of Excel software to develop financial reports
Specific contracts including typical building project contracts (nominated sub-contractors).
This module will be delivered by means of a series of lectures and laboratories.
