Overview

To develop and apply research skills to a selected topic in Culinary Nutrition, formulate a research question following an investigation of the field, devise and apply an appropriate methodology to address the research question, and, analyse the results, derive conclusions and disseminate the results.

Research Methods

Research methods supportThe dissertation co-ordinator will consulate with the students and organise workshops based on any requirements the studentshave for additional training in research methods not addressed in the Culinary Nutrition Research Studies module. This mayinclude topics such as design of experiments, scientific method, hypothesis testing, critical theory, qualitative methods, quantitative methods and SPSS. These workshops will take place prior to submission of the thesis proposal (see below). Thedissertation co-ordinator will also provide a workshop on thesis assessment to provide clear guidance on how a thesis isstructured and how it will be assessed.

Thesis

Students are free to choose their own dissertation topics, relevant to the specialist field. Students will submit a proposed researchtopic to the dissertation co-ordinator. The proposal will include the proposed title, an overview of the relevant literature, a briefdescription of the proposed methodology and an indicative plan to demonstrate that the research will be completed within thenecessary time frame (including reference to any required permissions or constraints which restrict the research). Thedissertation co-ordinator, along with other academic staff involved in dissertation supervision, will review the research proposalwith a view to giving either (a) approval and assigning a supervisor, (b) conditional approval and assigning a supervisor, or (c)requiring the student submit a revised proposal prior to being assigned a supervisor. On being assigned a supervisor, appropriateto the particular thesis, milestones will be agreed between the student and supervisor on delivery of elements of the thesis thatwill allow completion within the required time frame. A Masters thesis based on documentary sources alone would be expected tobe 25,000-30,000 words in length. The student input into a 30 ECTS credit dissertation should equate to 600 hours of studenttime, this should be taken into consideration when identifying the required inputs to the completed thesis. On submissison of thethesis, all students will be invited to an oral examination where they will be asked to describe the research process and answerquestions from the examiners. The dissertation will be graded upon completion of the oral examination.
