This module provide an introduction to contemporary planning techniques and principles practiced in Ireland e.g. function of zoning, density and other standards and planning principles/techniques for various types of development e.g. industry, retail, residential. It discusses the main elements of the Irish planning system, and provides a background to the policy context within which the Irish planning system operates.
The aim of the module is to provide students with an understanding of

The module content can be divided into two elements, Planning Techniques and Principles and the Irish Planning System
Planning Techniques and Principles.
Introduction to techniques/principles: function of zoning, density and other standards.
Planning principles/techniques/policies for various types of development e.g. industry, retail, residential
Environmental impact assessment.
The Irish Planning System
The scope of planning and related environmental legislation
Development / exempted development
Forward planning - Development Plans, Regional Planning Guidelines etc.
Development Control, including the Planning Appeal system.
Strategic Development Zones
Part V of the Planning and Development Act, 2000
Instruction is by means of lectures, site visits and classroom discussion and independent research and learning.
