Strategic management is a collection of organisational activities and processes used to systematically coordinate and align resources with the firm mission, vision and strategy. Strategic management theory is broadly broken down into strategy formulation and implementation and is closely associated with the discipline of strategic planning.
There are numerous mechanisms by which strategic objectives may be achieved which vary considerably depending upon the internal and external environments within which a firm operates. The module explores of the key factors shaping organisational strategy in theory and practice such that participants will be cognisant of the numerous aspects affecting decision making in a dynamic environment. The role of business ethics in decision making is an additional component to the module given its importance in strategic decision-making.
While the module relates to construction and real estate sectors it has potential widespread application across all disciplines within engineering and the built environment.

The methods will vary according to the nature of the subject area but will include a combination of lectures, class discussion, case study analysis and guest lectures (as applicable).
The module is delivered in a hybrid mode with every second week in-class on-campus, alternating with synchronous online delivery.
Students will have access to Brightspace where additional reading and reference materials will be made available.
