Research Methods and Proposal Writing

To be able to conduct academic research in a professional and ethical manner and to write an appropriately cited and referenced academic paper; to conduct a literature review, to formulate a research question, to devise a research methodology, derive results, and analyse and present those results. To produce a proposal for a research project which also addresses the human and ethical questions that arise from such a study.

Academic Writing

Academic and scientific writing, communicating research results, conducting a literature survey, investigative techniques, references and citations, writing style, structuring a research paper and thesis

Research management

Planning and organising a research project, time and task management, consent and confidential;, ethical considerations, trust, plagiarism

Quantitative Methods

Quantitative methods of research, data collection, statistics (statistical measures, distributions, correlation, regression, hypothesis testing etc.) analysis and interpretation of results

Qualitative Methods

Qualitative methods; questionanires and surveys, interviews; case studies, observation of behaviour, text analysis, mixed methods/model research, grounded theory, validity and reliability

Research project proposal writing

Identifying potential research topics in a specialism, formulating a clear research question/hypothesis; producing a research proposal which specifies a clear research question, setting it in the context of the state of the art, and selects a methodology by which the research question can be investigated
