Research Methodology and Methods

This compulsory module provides students with the knowledge and skills required to conduct a sizeable piece of independent and original research on a topic of their choice in an area relevant to their field of study. The module offers a general understanding of the social sciences research process and allows students to appreciate the nature of business and management research. 

It provides students with a critical understanding of the totality of the research process including differences between research philosophies including ontological and epistemological assumptions, the different research approaches, the differences between qualitative and quantitative research, and the different research strategies that can be employed to address their research aim, central research question, and research objectives. It provides students with the skills required on the different stages in conducting a research project such as idea generation and formulation of a research topic with clear research scope, research aim, central research question, and research objectives, identification and critical review of relevant literature, development of an appropriate and ethical research design, collection and analysis of primary and secondary data and critical reflection on findings and limitations of the research. 

The module develops the competence of students in selecting and using a range of appropriate quantitative and qualitative research methods, and professional skills and techniques associates with business research and to assist them in the writing of a research proposal and the process of writing and extended research report.

Teaching and learning is through a mixture of lectures, group discussions, in-class exercises, analysis of research proposal and dissertations, guest lectures (where applicable), and the completion and presentation of a dissertation proposal.
