Module Overview

BIM for Quantity Surveying and Cost Management

The BIM for Surveying (Quantity) and cost management module will develop the learner’s ability to apply their understanding of BIM within the context of the built environment, particularly Quantity Surveying (QS) and cost management. The module is designed to develop students’ knowledge and understanding on how digitisation and BIM can be better harnessed to realise the capabilities of a more digitised and integrated approach to project delivery. The module will teach QSs how to utilise BIM for efficiencies in time, cost, quality and sustainability, as well as gain an understanding of the concepts and process of information management, such as ISO 19650.

Indicative Syllabus:
• Working with files and file types e.g. DWG, DWF, DWFx, IFC
• Introduction to a BIM authoring application including tools to view and navigate around BIM
• BIM based quantification and estimating toolsets within the authoring application
• Working with object properties and running schedules for cost purposes
• Extract datasets to required format.
• Mapping object properties to QS work breakdown structures to create automated take offs.
• Advanced 5D take off from model, i.e., templates
• Compare revision changes between the models., value management, etc
• Extraction of quantities through a cloud-based solution.
• Importing data from authoring BIM to external cost related application, to produce cost information in QS standard methodologies
