Module Overview

Family Studies

The module is designed to provide the student with the opportunity to explore the family as a fundamental unit of society. Students will analyse the family through a social care lens examining diverse topics such as family structures and dynamics, family support and engagement, social policy issues and their impact on family functioning. This module will provide students with an understanding of the theoretical concepts and debates surrounding family life. The module aims to support the development of analytical and critical skills in acquiring and appraising appropriate research evidence which informs social care practice. In addition, the role of the social care worker within the context of family work will also be examined with a specific focus on human rights, partnership, support and social justice.

Demographic trends related to the family

Family composition. Family transitions. The role of men and women within the family. Parenting. Gender relations. Child-centred families. Contemporary social care responses to families in need.

Theories related to the family

Functionalism. Feminism. Conflict theory. Family Support theory. Family Systems theory. Resilience theory. Social Justice. Family transitions and the family life cycle.

Professional discourse in family work

Policy and practice frameworks relevant to family work. The role of social care work with families; supporting the rights and needs of children and their families. Developing professional relationships with families. Working in partnership with families, relatives and other professionals. Utilising evidence based and evidence informed practice.

Contemporary family issues

The effects of separation and divorce, violence, homelessness, direct provision, poverty, addiction, bereavement and mental health on families. Focusing on the rights and needs of the family members and a range of assessments, methods of intervention and support available.
