Software Project 6

The honours degree Software Project is largely a self-learning process and students are expected touse the knowledge they have gained during their attendance at lectures, labs and tutorials.The project supervisor is expected to provide support and advice for the project studentduring allocated time. The main role of the supervisor is to “guide” the project on aweekly basis and students are strongly advised to use project meetings in an effectivemanner by outlining problems, presenting experimental results and prepared questions.Students are strongly advised to follow advice from their supervisors and maintain regularcontact throughout the project.

Project management :

Project allocation, Project definition and identification, purpose, scope andobjectives. Analysis of objectives with reference to Engineers Ireland Code ofEthics. Project Specification and Planning: Project organisation, workbreakdown structure, Gantt/PERT, costing, implementation and review.

Project Preparation :

Maintenance of logbook, design methologies,familiarisation with measurement and test equipment, requirementsspecifications. Literature resources such as Science Direct and IEEE. FinancialConstraints. Non Disclosure Agreements.

Focused Research/Development :

Investigation of algorithms, data-structures and software techniques, Software and if necessary circuit design and development. Incremental unit testing and final verification testing. Development and use of a test plan, bill of materials generation and component ordering (if necessary), implementation of the designed software/hardware prototype, understanding of operation, testing and debug, collection and analysis of results Awareness of environmental impact.

Project Reports:

Departmental guidelines for report writing. Formats to beused. (Captioning, referencing, figures, equations, glossary and tables)Interim report due last week of initial Semester or as agreed with supervisor.Final Project report (50 pages max) due late in second Semester or as agreedwith supervisor.

Project Presentations :

Short Interim Presentation at beginning of Semester 2mainly consisting of a description of what has been completed so far and whatwill be completed during Semester 2.Final Presentation at end of Semester 2, or when agreed with supervisor,consisting of a detailed project description (20 mins), Q&A (15 mins) anddemonstration (15 mins)NOTE:The module contact hours comprise;(a) weekly formal lecture concerning management of the project(b) face to face meetings with the project supervisor and(c) laboratory time.Online Support material and upload facilities are available on Moodlecomprising :- Student Advisory Note- Degree Project Procedure- Responsibilitieds and Roles- Marking Guidelines- Student Diary Pro (Electronic Diary)
