This module will cover an introduction to the sustainability of human activities with regards to atmospheric and hydrological quality.
It will address key aspects of drinking water supplies and their vulnerability to contamination as well as the processes used to treat potable water.
This module introduces students to the principles of atmospheric chemistry and will provide an introduction to criteria air pollutants and associated health impacts.
The Hydrologic cycle and pollution; Confined and unconfined aquifers; Biogeochemical cycles; Diffuse pollution including farm wastes, septic tanks and stormwater; Quality criteria for beneficial water uses including drinking water sources; recreational waters and fisheries; Vulnerability factors for surface waters sources and private wells; Water-borne diseases; Water treatment processes including disinfection and fluoridation requirements; Structure and composition of the atmosphere; Effects of electromagnetic radiation sources; criteria air pollutants; meteorological impacts on air quality.
