Environmental Health 1 : Professional Studies

Professional studies emphasises the functions, activities and procedures used by the State for regulation of environmental health issues and problems in relation to situations not specifically arising in other areas of the programme. The official policies, standards and procedures used by Environmental Health departments to address issues such as nuisances, caravan parks, temporary dwellings, offensive trades, burial grounds and exhumations, common lodging houses, casual trading, derelict sites, places of public resort, communicable diseases, nursing homes, child care facilities, poisons and SDGs.   Codes of professional conduct, ethics and confidentiality and the rights and roles of officials are addressed.

Dealing with EH professional matters in the HSE and County Councils

Problem based learning and the use of case studies will assist in the development of problem solving and reasoning and reflection. Group based discussion will enhance teamwork along with critical thinking and argumentation skills. The use role play will assist students in the preparation, organisation and conducting of inspection and audit for professional placement. 

Also a knowledge transfer session from final year students will assist students in the preparation for professional practice.   A visit to the Irish courts will enhance the preparation for court proceedings in relation to EH matters.  This component will be delivered by a qualified barrister
