Occupational Safety Management for the Food & Beverage Sector

This module will prepare the students for their work placement within the food and beverage industry. The module aims to develop an understanding of the overall concept of risk management within the food industry. Students will have a full understanding of hazards, risk and protective and preventive measures associated with the food and beverage sector.
Students will be familiar with the risk assessment process and be in a position to identify hazards
associated with their work placement activities. Develop the student’s ability to use risk assessment techniques in compiling an overall protective and preventive strategy for an organisation as part of their work placement activities. As part of this module the students will be given the student an introduction to workplace health and safety in Ireland along with address the key requirements of health and safety legislation. Students will cover workplace health and safety management including the risk assessment process, the purpose, structure and compilation of a safety statement and a safety management system. Specific H&S topics related to the food and beverage sector will also be addressed.

Lecture based classes with discussion elements. Use of relevant audio-visual material and on-line Risk Assessment tools for example BeSmart.ie from HSA. Implementation of preventive and proactive strategies will develop the students critical thinking as risk evaluation involves prioritisation of control measures. Application of knowledge will be facilitated during student work placement.
