Introduction to the microbial world. Eukaryotic and prokaryotic cell structure. Morphology and reproduction of bacteria. Morphology and reproduction of fungi. Morphology and reproduction of viruses. Effect of environmental and nutritional factors on microbial growth. Introduction to the control of microbial growth: sterilisation and disinfection. Microbial diseases: reservoirs of infection, modes of transmission. Immune response: non-specific and specific defence mechanisms. Introduction to the microbiology of water, air and surfaces.
