Basic Microbiology for Environmental Health

Introduction to the morphology and growth characteristics of microorganisms for students of Environmental Health. Role of microorganisms in disease and immune response mechanisms will be examined. Students will gain practical experience in basic analytical methods.

Introduction to the microbial world. Eukaryotic and prokaryotic cell structure. Morphology and reproduction of bacteria. Morphology and reproduction of fungi. Morphology and reproduction of viruses. Effect of environmental and nutritional factors on microbial growth. Introduction to the control of microbial growth: sterilisation and disinfection. Microbial diseases: reservoirs of infection, modes of transmission. Immune response: non-specific and specific defence mechanisms. Introduction to the microbiology of water, air and surfaces.
