Module Overview

Advanced Pharmeceutical Microbiology

This module will introduce students to a range of advanced and current topics in microbiology. The aspects covered include novel applications of functional foods, synbiotics, nutraceuticals and bacteriocins. The development and spread of antimicrobial resistant microorganisms, nosocomial and global infectious diseases will be investigated. Students will examine in detail the mechanisms and genetics associated with of antimicrobial resistance. Health and safety aspects and microbiological risk assessment and the societal impact of microbiology will be examined. The significance of biofilms and their role in the food, pharmaceutical and clinical situations will be investigated in detail. Advances in microbiological analysis and applications of molecular techniques will be expanded on in detail.

This module aims to expand the students understanding of microbiological aspects of nutraceuticals antimicrobial resistance through analysis of current and topical issues. This module also aims to develop team working skills through performance and assessment of assignment in team format.
