Topics and Supervision

Please refer to the accompanying research project guide for how the project is assessed. Students are free to choose their own research project topic, or choose one from a list of suggested topics, or choose a topic which has been specified by industry. The topic forms the basis of a research proposal as part of the Research Methods and Proposal Writing module. The topic must have a research focus and be in the general area of AI and human centred AI. Once a student submits a proposal it will be vetted by the research project steering committee (made up of the research project coordinator and the academic staff involved in supervision of research projects). The steering commitee will also consider the ethical implications of any proposal and grant approval where required for the project. Proposals must have a clear description of the research problem, why the problem needs addressing, and an outline of how the problem will be addressed. Once a proposal meets the accepted standard a supervisor will be assigned and the research project commences. An industry mentor may also be appointed. Topics are expected to be varied and have followed on in the main from the taught modules. Students will be required to make presentations at regular intervals to the panel of supervisors. A research project schedule with deliverables and dates will be published each year.

Assessment

All students will be required to undergo a viva examination at the end of their research project. The examination will involve the student presenting the results of the research and defending their work. Following the viva examination the research project will be graded based on the published assessment criteria which will describe how a project is to be graded. Second readers will grade research projects. The outputs of the research project are a research paper of publishable standard, and a research poster.
