German Studies

The major in German Studies has been developed specifically for the Arts programme. It draws on a suite of well established modules and principles which underpin the very successful Bachelor of Arts (Honours) International Business and Languages programme, in TU Dublin.

The major in German Studies provides you with opportunity to achieve high levels of linguistic proficiency in German and to explore a range of cultural and social perspectives in German speaking countries and communities. Literature, history & cinema are some of the directions you may pursue for more in-depth exploration. You will engage with our team of dedicated teachers and internationally recognized scholars who are delighted to share their passion and expertise through the diverse range of modules on offer in this German Studies Major.

As a student, you will have six mandatory modules. You will also be able to choose from optional modules and pathways as you progress through the major. Four of the mandatory modules build and develop foundations for language learning and cultural awareness. Two mandatory modules offered in the later stages of your programme of study will enable you to progress towards advanced language proficiency and enhanced cultural understanding.

Students will practice, develop and demonstrate development in all skill areas of reading, writing, speaking and listening in communicative language classes. Students will also explore social and cultural issues in German speaking regions, and extend their reading and listening skills, in particular, through study of a range of cultural products. This approach provides insight and scope for development of the intercultural and professional competencies required to function professionally in a German-speaking environment. Informed by the Arts lens and the approach adopted for this major, students will synthesise critical thinking, breadth of understanding and research skills in their capstone project/dissertation.

Graduates of the major in German Studies on the Arts programme are likely to pursue career opportunities in many sectors, especially if they complement their study in Arts with electives or even a double major in disciplines as disparate as computer science, media, tourism & hospitality management or food science. It is the ideal major for those with a real interest in German language and German speaking culture. You will be able to develop your interests and passions through the choices you make, and through your engagement with the creative and critical approaches to learning that you will experience.
As linguists with demonstrable ability to communicate effectively through German and with heightened sensitivity for communicating with diverse audiences, graduates will be able to draw on valuable skills, insight and knowledge to build careers in both public and private enterprises.   • Working in marketing, communication and PR roles providing skill and insight to assist other professionals engage with their customers and clients
  • Working in areas of administration, engaging with or providing translation and interpreting services in international organisations
  • Taking on roles in customer relationship and content management in multinational corporations and global technology companies
  • Pursuing professional postgraduate study to qualify as primary school teachers or to qualify and register with Teaching Council for second-level teaching
  • Working with trade & export agencies to develop and extend international markets and customer bases
