The major in Italian Studies has been developed specifically for the Arts programme. It draws on a suite of well-established modules and principles which underpin the very successful Bachelor of Arts (Honours) International Business and Languages programme, in TU Dublin.
The major in Italian Studies provides you with opportunity to achieve high levels of linguistic proficiency in Italian and to explore a range of cultural and social perspectives in Italian speaking countries and communities. Literature, history & cinema are some of the directions you may pursue for more in-depth exploration. You will engage with our team of dedicated teachers and internationally recognized scholars who are delighted to share their passion and expertise through the diverse range of modules on offer in this Italian Studies Major.
As a student, you will have six mandatory modules. You will also be able to choose from optional modules and pathways as you progress through the major. Four of the mandatory modules build and develop foundations for language learning and cultural awareness. Two mandatory modules offered in the later stages of your programme of study will enable you to progress towards advanced language proficiency and enhanced cultural understanding.
Students will practice, develop and demonstrate development in all skill areas of reading, writing, speaking and listening in communicative language classes. Students will also explore social and cultural issues in Italian speaking regions, and extend their reading and listening skills, in particular, through study of a range of cultural products. This approach provides insight and scope for development of the intercultural and professional competencies required to function professionally in a Italian-speaking environment. Informed by the arts lens and the approach adopted for this major, students will synthesise critical thinking, breadth of understanding and research skills in their capstone project/dissertation.
