Sports & Leisure

Sports & Leisure provides the perfect real-world context in which students can apply and further develop the theoretical knowledge and skills that they will accumulate through their core modules in the Liberal Arts degree. This stream provides a deep insight into a sector which is important in global health and wellbeing.

This stream provides innovative learning opportunities and is underpinned by concepts such as sustainability, community empowerment, global citizenship, diversity and inclusivity, cultural representation and innovation. In addition, students choosing modules on this stream can add an active element to their liberal arts degree while learning about the operations of this sector. This stream provides a learning journey full of experiential learning from field trips, site visits and guest lectures to authentic assessments often linked to fitness activities, communities or sports and leisure businesses.  

As such this stream offers students an opportunity to develop skills and attributes that will be helpful in their future careers and academic development.

The Major is Sports & Leisure can lead to the following career opportunities

  • Facility and Operations Management

Oversee daily operations of sports centres, gyms, stadiums, leisure centres, or parks including Leisure Centre Manager, Sports Facility Coordinator, Operations Manager.

  • Sports Development and Coaching

Develop programs to increase participation in sports at community or elite levels including Sports Development Officer, Community Sports Coordinator, Youth Sports Coach.

  • Fitness and Wellness

Promote health through fitness programs and wellness services including Personal Trainer, Fitness Centre Manager.

  • Recreation Management

Design and deliver leisure programs for communities, schools, or resorts including Recreation Manager, Camp Director, Activity Coordinator.

  • Sports Governance and Policy

Work with governing bodies or nonprofits to influence sports policy and regulation including Sports Administrator, Policy Officer, Compliance Manager.

  • Further study

There are opportunities for further study in the disciplines of Sports and Leisure and as a result of the Services Management approach taken in the major to engage in further study in functional business areas including marketing, human resources and management
