Understanding challenges to equity, diversity and inclusion in Higher Education, Research & Innovation

31 Aug, 2022

While many Higher Education and R&I organisations have made an explicit commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) this is only effective when translated into actions that deliver tangible and sustainable outcomes over the short, medium and long term.

There are many obstacles to achieving EDI goals, one of them being a lack of knowledge and understanding of the ways in which privilege and discrimination in these organisations are linked to different personal characteristics/identities/circumstances with regards to gender, age, socioeconomic background, race/ ethnicity, ability, sexual orientation, geographical location or religion/belief, and how these intersect to produce unique experiences of inclusion and exclusion.

RINCE Seminar Series 2022/2023 offers an opportunity to bring together a network of researchers, practitioners, and other professionals with interests in EDI in Higher Education and R&I, to progress on how we think about, and enact, EDI values towards institutional change. In the first part of this series, the focus will be on the experiences of specific social groups/ identities/personal circumstances, although an intersectional perspective will be adopted throughout. In the second part of the series, the focus will move to topical issues, such as Gender-Based Violence, Care, and Masculinities in such organisational settings.
