Dr Susan O’Shaughnessy is a lecturer in German, Erasmus Academic Coordinator and Year 3 coordinator for programmes in the Department of Languages. She has honours degrees in French and German, Spanish and Humanities, an MA in German, and a doctorate in higher education (EdD) from the University of Sheffield. Her doctoral thesis examined the changing professional identity of German language lecturers in Irish higher education institutions.  

Apart from lecturing in German language and cultural and literary studies Susan has taught Spanish, European Studies, Communications and Professional Development, as well as English for Academic Purposes to Erasmus and international students across the City campus.  She carried out the role of Promotions and Recruitment Officer for the College of Engineering and Built Environment for several years.  

Her research interests include German for specialised purposes; second language acquisition; the use of technology in language teaching and learning; student transitions and articulation; the Erasmus student experience; professional identity and change management; issues in higher education; German cultural and literary studies.
