Dr Emma O’Brien is a lecturer and researcher in the School of Hospitality Management and Tourism lecturing on a variety of modules including entrepreneurship, digital marketing and communications. Emma’s key areas of research interest are entrepreneurship and community engagement. Her PhD involved a study of higher education’s role in the development of inclusive entrepreneurial education for disadvantaged communities. For the first time, this study presented an empirically grounded framework to guide HEIs in addressing social inclusion through entrepreneurship.

In addition to her lecturing and postgraduate supervision roles, Emma is an active researcher and has published and presented widely. With over twenty years’ experience in higher education, Emma’s academic background in science, science communication, entrepreneurship, and education facilitates a transdisciplinary approach to her research. Throughout her academic career she has led several funded research initiatives. Her current research interest explores how universities can engage with communities in the co-creation of entrepreneurial education initiatives. Emma is a member of the European Council for Small Business and is a reviewer for several entrepreneurship related academic journals.
