Overview

This module will provide an insight into the chemical and physical changes to Portland and limestone cements as well as supplementary cementitious materials as they hydrate over time. The students will learn about the chemistry of cement manufacture, the clinker phases and the precipitation of hydrate phases over time. The module will include thermodynamic cement hydration modelling and other numerical analysis to better understand lecture material.

Overview

The infrastructure that enables the global economy to grow and which communities rely on must be sustainable. Within the “developed world” large parts of the existing infrastructure assets were originally built during the 19th century. They were designed, constructed and operated for a different climate. Within the “developing world” climate change is affecting crop cycles, water resources and disaster risk management. In order to adapt to this changing environment, our traditional engineering approach to design needs to be radically altered. This module will seek to develop new skills and expertise in adapting infrastructure.

Overview

The purpose of this module is to introduce students to various BIM technologies and workflows used by design teams in design and documentation of buildings. To introduce students to technology for creating a 3D digital building model and creating 2D drawings used in the documentation of a project.

This module introduces the student to a typical workflow between an architect and structural engineer in a BIM environment. The module builds on skills learned in Collaborative Working (including BIM) in Civil and Structural Engineering I.

Overview

This module provides students with a sound theoretical basis and an understanding of finite element theory so they can use it to solve practical problems including thermal transport, hydraulic systems, fluid flow, electromagnetism, electrical networks and civil engineering with worked examples throughout. It will also demonstrate how it has been used in aeronautical, biomedical and automotive applications.

The coursework will use computational software to analyse real problems and will demonstrate how the theoretical aspects are used in practice. Other software currently available for other applications will also be introduced.

The module will also include one or more guest lectures by experts who have successfully applied the finite element method to real-world problems. This will allow the student to see the potential of the method away from the classroom.

This module introduces the student to the main infrastructural topics which will be addressed in the programme and highlights their economic, social and environmental impacts. Key tools for estimating and understanding these impacts are outlined before issues of sustainability are discussed for each infrastructural group: water; energy; transport; and structures. The module highlights the global, national and regional contexts for the sustainability debate and presents current state of the art and possible future trends in each area. Overview

This is a professional development module in advanced theory, implementation, design, practical applications, and legislative & planning frameworks around Active Travel infrastructure.

The aim of this module is to allow students to develop the necessary skills to identify the most applicable approaches to design, appraisal and implementation of active travel infrastructure within a variety of urban and rural contexts. The module will introduce case studies and expose students to active evaluation of active travel projects.  The module will demonstrate how Active Travel can play a central role in a sustainable mobility framework.

The module is suited to individuals from multi-disciplinary backgrounds and who may be involved in the planning, design, implementation and evaluation of Active Travel Infrastructure.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of the module the learner will be able to:

  • Identify the appropriate Key Legislative Frameworks and Mechanisms for a given Active Travel Infrastructure scheme
  • Evaluate Active Travel Infrastructure schemes in a given context
  • Plan the Design, Implementation and Maintenance stages for a given Active Travel Infrastructure scheme

Overview

It is desired, in modern construction, that natural light is utilised as much as possible, this results in large open span office with glazed facades. To accommodate this, buildings are becoming more slender with lighter material being utilised. A consequence of lighter open structures is an increased risk of sway and instability.

Designers today need to be aware of the importance of stability checks to ensure their structures meet all requirements, while maintaining an economic, safe and environmentally sustainable structure.

The European Waste Management Hierarchy highlighted the need for a rationalised system of waste management, focussing on the concept of sustainability by moving away from disposal-only options and encouraging ‘reduce, reuse, recycle’. Waste management planning is a complex issue, with difficulties in balancing strategies and treatment technologies from the viewpoint of economics and environmental impacts. This module aims to provide learners with the advanced knowledge and skills required to meet the increasingly complex requirements of the waste management sector. Along with class-based learning, design & modelling tools, in-depth review of modern case studies and interaction with industry professionals will be used in the delivery of this module. The module will cover waste reduction strategies, ‘zero-waste’ protocols, waste auditing, waste management strategies, waste treatment technologies and waste diversion options. This will allow the learner to develop new skills and expertise in adapting infrastructure to create marketable engineering skills and solutions suitable for use nationally and internationally.

Overview

Water resources management of a river basin is vitally important for sustainable development. Therefore, the aim of this module is to provide the students with advanced scientific knowledge required to design strategic water resources management plans for both water quantity and water quality in a river basin. To achieve this aim, basic principles of water resources management and relevant legislations and regulations will be firstly introduced to students. Then the impact of climate and land use changes on water resources and the methods to incorporate such impacts on future water resources management plans will be illustrated. Lastly several hydrological and water quality models used to design any water quantity and water quality management plan will be presented. In this aspect a particular focus is directed towards the use of the rainfall–runoff models and the river flow routing models in solving complex river basin flooding problems and the use of the groundwater models in addressing groundwater management problems.
