The Twentieth Century Piano Sonata
A shared recital presented by our two Kawai Bursary winners, Mickey Glen Tomas (Piano) and Peter Ryan (Piano).
This recital features two examples of the Twentieth-Century Piano Sonata, composed almost fifty years apart. Prokofiev’s seventh sonata is a giant of the piano literature, composed in 1942, one of his three ‘war sonatas’.
Australian composer Carl Vine’s first sonata was composed in 1990. It presents a snapshot of late twentieth-century style with sharp contrast between overt virtuosity and contemplative improvisation.
