Tom Hodgson - Percussion I

Tom is Principal Timpanist of the Young Musicians Symphony Orchestra, having previously held the position of Principal Percussionist.  He is currently studying for his Masters degree on the "Orchestral Artistry" course at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, with funding as the School's Nick Jack Award holder for 2022-23, and is particularly enjoying tuition from the LSO's timpanist, Nigel Thomas.

The highlights of his time at Guildhall as both an under and postgraduate student have been concerts at the Barbican Centre, including Messiaen's Turangalîla (as principal), Mahler's Second and Seventh Symphonies, and, most recently, Mahler's First Symphony (as timpanist).

As a chamber musician, recent projects have included Persephassa by Iannis Xenakis and Steve Reich's Sextet but working on this performance of Bartók's Sonata has been especially exciting.

Tom also enjoys drum kit and musical theatre playing, with West Side Story, In The Heights, and Legally Blonde all examples of memorable experiences working as a freelancer with youth and amateur societies.  Passionate about encouraging young musicians, he teaches percussion and drum kit, and has been West Sussex Youth Orchestra's section tutor since 2019.

When he's not hitting things, Tom is a keen follower of football and cricket, and loves to spend time with his partner playing the guitar, cooking, and doing pub quizzes.
