His post-graduate studies at PhD level are focussed on Performance Practice in Orchestral Music: 1750-1800.

In particular it examines the inter-relationship between instrument development, performer and composer, demonstrating how the evolution of individual instruments with particular performance demands directly influenced the music written during the period.

The research involves a case study of three symphonies by Franz Joseph Haydn (1732–1809) showing how the inter-relationship between instrument development, performer and composer played an important role in the composition of this music.

Since January 2007 David has been Principal Conductor with the RTE Concert Orchestra.
