Dr Irene Murtagh is a Lecturer and a Principal Investigator at the Department of Informatics, TU Dublin. She is also an Adjunct Assistant Professor at the Centre for Deaf Studies, Trinity College Dublin. She holds a BSc. (Hons) in Computing (TU Dublin), an MPhil. in Speech and Language Processing (Trinity College Dublin) and a PhD in Computational Linguistics (Trinity College Dublin). 

Irene is a Funded Investigator in ADAPT, the SFI Research Centre for AI-Driven Digital Content Technology  and is also a Principal Investigator in the SFI Centre for Research Training in Digitally-Enhanced Reality (D-REAL). Her primary research interests lie within the domain of artificial intelligence and cognitive technology, centred around computational linguistics and natural language processing. In particular, machine translation,  natural language processing, speech acoustic processing, embodied conversational agents and linguistics/computational linguistics.

Dr Murtagh is currently the TU Dublin Principal Investigator on the SignON (Horizon 2020) project, which comprises 17 EU consortium partners. The research team at TU Dublin are responsible for the provision of the Natural Language Processing layer for sign language within the project. They will provide an interface between the natural language understanding (NLU) component and the sign language realisation (SLR) component of the project, facilitating machine translation capability between verbal language and sign language.
