3DAssist is a registered charity based in the School of Engineering, Tallaght Campus.
3DAssist was started in December 2015 with the primary objective to design and manufacture free educational, assistive and prosthetic devices for children who need them.

In approximately 1 in 20,000 births, children are born without hands or arms due to a condition called Amniotic Band Syndrome (ABS). At present it is expensive to provide suitable prosthetics for these children as they grow quickly. As a result, children normally have to wait until their mid to late teens to be fitted with prosthetics. It is estimated that there are 150 children in Ireland with this condition.
3DAssist has access to the skills required and a large pool of volunteer engineers and student engineers to design and manufacture prosthetics for these children for free. As of November 2021 we have made over 60 free hands and arms for children with ABS. It usually take 2-3 weeks to deliver each prosthetic.

We have established links with several other charities. We have designed and 3D printed braille based educational devices for visually impaired children in Childvision and organised wheelchair costume design events for the  LauraLynn Hospice for Children.

Second Level Schools
Over the years, we have developed strong links between the Engineering School and Second Levels Schools, both local and further afield. Such links give Second Level Schools the ability to introduce their students to a snapshot of the Engineering way of life, whilst also giving them the opportunity to explore a possible career path within the Engineering discipline

If you are interested to see what we can offer, or would like us to assist with introducing your 5th or 6th year students to Engineering, please feel free to contact us using the following email address: david.maguire@tudublin.ie.

Some of these initiatives include:

Taster Sessions
Our Second level school taster sessions involve students participating in some Engineering Activities, to give them a small taste of Engineering life on our campus. A tour of the facilities allows the students the opportunity to see our 3rd level students at work in our Labs.

Presentation to Your School
Choosing the right college is important for all students. The School of Engineering can assist by presenting to final year classes, to help when it comes to choosing a career in Engineering. The presentation will cover aspects of Engineering and why TU Dublin is leading choice for all students.

Mathematics Materials for Schools
Over the last decade, we have developed strong links with teachers and students of mathematics in second level schools in the South Dublin region. We have materials and actiities that we can provide upon request for second level teachers and students to use.

TU Dublin (Tallaght Campus) in partnership with Citywise Education Tallaght have worked together for several years on the development of a STEM Academy.

Citywise Education provides young people with after-school and out-of-school educational support and is based in Jobstown, Dublin 24.

We have provided technical support and expertise to the project, and recent developments have included short courses such as an Introduction to Electronics, and Computing Using the Raspberry Pi.

The objective is to provide educational programmes that engage young people and give them an enthusiasm for learning.
